Puzzle Games That Don't Treat You Like a Child

June 22, 2026 · Miriam Kessler

There's a plague of puzzle games that hold your hand so tightly you never actually solve anything. A hint pops up before you've had a chance to think, and every 'win' feels hollow.

The good ones do the opposite. Take Mind Lattice: it introduces a single rule, then keeps twisting it, and it trusts you to keep up. When you get stuck, there's an undo button and freedom to experiment, but no one hands you the answer.

That trust is the whole appeal. A puzzle you actually cracked yourself sticks with you. A puzzle the game solved for you evaporates the second you close the app.

If you're hunting for puzzlers, look for ones with generous undo systems and stingy hints. It sounds backwards, but that combination is the sign of a designer who respects your brain.
